Mo Farah wins Great North Run for record fifth time

Olympic Sports

Mo Farah has won the Great North Run for the fifth consecutive year, becoming the most successful athlete in the history of the event.

The four-time Olympic champion won the 13.1-mile race finishing with a time of 59 minutes and 26 seconds.

New Zealand's Jake Robertson finished 31 seconds back in second with Belgium's Bashir Abdi rounding off the top three on the banks of the River Tyne in Newcastle.

First held in 1981, the record for the most wins in the men's elite race was held for 22 years by Kenya's Benson Maysa, who won his last race in 1996.

But since winning the half-marathon for the first time in 2014, Farah has dominated the event. Sunday's race was the second time he has won in under an hour with the Briton just falling short of his 2015 time of 59 minutes 22 seconds.

Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot, the current London Marathon champion, won the women's elite race while David Weir won the men's wheelchair race for a seventh time, setting a new course record in the process.
