Defensive line depth a big concern with Bears' first 53-man roster

CHICAGO -- Here's a player-by-player look at the Chicago Bears' 53-man roster:

QUARTERBACK (3)

Jay Cutler: The franchise leader in passing yards (18,725), Cutler has one career playoff victory in nine NFL seasons.

Jimmy Clausen: Clausen played OK in one start last year, and that's basically why he's the backup.

David Fales: The Bears' 2014 sixth-round draft choice lit up the Cleveland Browns for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason finale.

RUNNING BACK (4)

Matt Forte: Two-time Pro Bowler (2011, 13), Forte ranks second in team history in yards from scrimmage (11,431).

Jacquizz Rodgers: Small, but powerfully built, Rodgers appeared in 65 games for Atlanta from 2011-14.

Jeremy Langford: Langford is a fourth-round pick who may eventually replace Forte in the starting lineup.

Ka'Deem Carey: After emerging as the fourth running back when Senorise Perry went on injured reserve, Carey led Chicago with 68 rushing yards in the exhibition finale.

WIDE RECEIVER (6)

Alshon Jeffery: Sidelined since injuring a calf muscle on Aug. 12, Jeffrey is entering the final year of his contract.

Eddie Royal: Royal caught 91 passes from Cutler as a rookie in 2008. The veteran receiver is the most versatile of this group.

Marquess Wilson: Talented, but injury prone, Wilson is nursing a sore hamstring.

Marc Mariani: Mariani made the Pro Bowl in 2010 as a return man for the Tennessee Titans.

Josh Bellamy: The 6-foot receiver appeared in four games for the Bears last year and also spent time with Washington and Kansas City.

Cameron Meredith: Meredith is a big target at 6-foot-3. He played at Illinois State where he caught 87 balls for 1,431 yards and 14 touchdowns.

TIGHT ENDS (3)

Martellus Bennett: Led all NFL tight ends with 90 receptions in 2014, Bennett skipped the offseason program but appears up to speed in the offense.

Zach Miller: An effective receiver but needs to stay healthy. Miller spent last year on injured reserve.

Khari Lee: Bears sent a future sixth-round pick to Texans for Lee.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)

Kyle Long: The Bears' best offensive lineman, Long may eventually move to right tackle.

Jermon Bushrod: The veteran left tackle is dealing with a sore back.

Will Montgomery: Montgomery knows the offense from his days with Fox and Adam Gase in Denver.

Matt Slauson: Talented guard, but Slauson's durability will be key. He missed most of last year with a variety of ailments.

Charles Leno: Leno also had problems in the preseason but can be a swing tackle.

Vladimir Ducasse: He may be the best choice to play right guard if Long bounces outside.

Hroniss Grasu: Grasu was the Bears' third-round pick. It is unclear whether the Bears plan to activate Grasu on game day. Seems as if he needs to get stronger.

Patrick Omameh: He started all 16 games at right guard last year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

DEFENSIVE LINE (5)

Ego Ferguson: Ferguson lost weight to play defensive end in the 3-4.

Jarvis Jenkins: He is now the senior member of the defensive line until Jeremiah Ratliff returns from suspension.

Eddie Goldman: A second-round pick, Goldman suffered a concussion in the third preseason game.

Will Sutton: One of the bright spots of camp, Sutton bolted up the depth chart.

Cornelius Washington: Washington played in a 3-4 defense in college at Georgia, and he has value on special teams.

LINEBACKERS (9)

Jared Allen: Allen owns eight double-digit sack seasons (2005 & '07-13).

Shea McClellin: He showed flashes in the preseason at inside linebacker after previously playing defensive end and outside linebacker.

Christian Jones: Former undrafted free agent, Jones started five games last year.

Pernell McPhee: McPhee signed a five-year contract in the offseason and had a career-high 7.5 sacks last year for the Baltimore Ravens.

Lamarr Houston: He is moving from defensive end to outside linebacker. Played in a similar scheme in Oakland.

Sam Acho: A maximum effort guy, Acho's illness late in the preseason slightly derailed an outstanding summer.

Jon Bostic: The oft-injured inside linebacker led the Bears in tackles in 2014.

John Timu: An udrafted rookie free agent out of Washington, Timu made several plays in the preseason to ingratiate himself to the coaching staff.

Willie Young: He led the Bears with 10 sacks last year. Young will be playing outside linebacker for the first time in his career.

CORNERBACK (7)

Kyle Fuller: A former first-round pick, Fuller intercepted four passes as a rookie but had a bumpy sophomore preseason.

Alan Ball: Ball is a tall cornerback (6-foot-2) who pushed Tim Jennings off the roster.

Terrance Mitchell: A top reserve, Mitchell made the best play of the preseason when he made a leaping interception at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Sherrick McManis: McManis, who was a ball hawk in the preseason, could be the Week 1 starting nickelback.

Demontre Hurst: A former starting nickelback who can also play safety, Hurst gives the Bears options.

Tracy Porter: Bears like Porter's experience, but he has been banged up much of the preseason.

Bryce Callahan: Another undrafted rookie, Callahan intercepted 13 passes in 47 career games at Rice.

SAFETY (4)

Antrel Rolle: The three-time Pro Bowler has 139 career starts.

Adrian Amos: A fifth-round pick, Amos beat out Brock Vereen for the starting free safety job.

Brock Vereen: A 2014 fourth-round draft choice who made five starts and eight special teams tackles as a rookie.

Harold Jones-Quartey: Undrafted rookie out of Division II Findlay who the Bears claimed off waivers.

SPECIALISTS (3)

Robbie Gould: Gould is the most accurate kicker in team history and sixth most accurate in NFL history.

Pat O'Donnell: Punted 71 times for 3,107 yards (43.8 gross average) with 20 punts downed inside the 20 as a rookie.

Thomas Gafford: Gafford joined the Bears after appearing in 105 straight games for the Kansas City Chiefs.
