Daytona State College (Fla.) sophomore forward Rashaun Stimage, a Chicago native, has committed to DePaul. Stimage will play at Daytona State in 2013-14 before joining the Blue Demons in 2014-15.

Stimage, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward, starred at Farragut Academy in Chicago’s Public League. He attended Blinn College in Texas as a freshman and averaged 15 points and 7.9 rebounds in 15 games. He was an ESPNChicago.com all-area selection as a high school senior and averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Admirals.

“This was the best fit for him,” Farragut coach Wolf Nelson said. “I don’t care who else was looking at him. This was the best situation for him.

“He’s the most versatile player I’ve had since Kevin Garnett. He can run the floor; he can shoot; he can pass; he can block shots; he can rebound. I think he brings a lot with him to a team.”

Former Farragut star and Illinois Mr. Basketball Ronnie Fields, who committed but never played at DePaul, has trained Stimage during the last year and has been highly impressed by Stimage’s game.

“The kid has NBA potential,” Fields said. “He’s athletic. He’s 6-8. He’s long. He can shoot the ball. The kid is an amazing talent, some of the stuff he’s able to do. He’s got a mixture, a combination of different pieces to his game. He reminds me a little bit of Tracy McGrady.”

Stimage is DePaul coach Oliver Purnell’s fourth recruit from the Chicago Public League in the past year. Stimage will join former Public League players Billy Garrett Jr. (Morgan Park), Tommy Hamilton Jr. (Whitney Young) and Myke Henry (Orr) at DePaul.

“It reminds me of the days when DePaul had Bobby Simmons, Quentin Richardson and all those guys,” Nelson said. “They’re all Chicago guys, all-city, all-state talent.”
