WR Stevie Johnson shines in Chargers' loss to Seahawks

SAN DIEGO -- A few thoughts on the San Diego Chargers' 16-15 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the team's first loss in exhibition play this year:

What it means: The Chargers cleared a major hurdle by getting through the game with no major injuries. Quarterback Philip Rivers played the entire first half, his most action of the preseason. He suffered an injury to his throwing hand after hitting it on Seattle linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis' hand following through on a pass to Stevie Johnson. Rivers went into the locker room to have his hand evaluated and did not play in the second half. But he watched from the sidelines, did not have his hand wrapped and said he could have played if it were a regular-season game. Rivers played solid, finishing 13 of 19 for 140 yards. Rivers was sacked twice and hit four times, posting an 89.8 passer rating.

Play of the game: At the end of the third quarter, running back Branden Oliver took a short pass from Kellen Clemens and shook loose for a 70-yard touchdown. The second-year pro out of Buffalo has looked even more explosive and confident running the football than his rookie season.

Stat of note: Johnson hauled in a pass from Rivers on the opening series for the Chargers for 34 yards. The play helped set up a 32-yard field goal by Nick Novak. Johnson finished with four catches for 63 yards on six targets.

Injuries of note: Along with Rivers, second-year pro Jeremiah Attaochu suffered a right leg injury in the first half and did not return. Attaochu had his his leg wrapped in ice while he watched from the sideline.

What’s next: The Chargers will take Sunday off, returning to the field at Chargers Park on Monday. Roster cuts from 90 players down to 75 are due Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
