The Minnesota Vikings wrapped up their offseason program Thursday and will open training camp on July 28 at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota. Here's our 53-man roster projection:
Quarterbacks (3): Teddy Bridgewater, Shaun Hill, Taylor Heinicke (cut: Joel Stave).
The battle to watch in training camp will be for the No. 2 QB spot, where Heinicke could push Hill in his second season.
Running backs (3): Adrian Peterson, Jerick McKinnon, Matt Asiata (cut: C.J. Ham, Jhurell Pressley).
At one of the deepest position groups on the Vikings' roster, there won't be any changes from the group the team carried in 2015.
Fullback (1): Zach Line (cut: Blake Renaud).
Line returns for another year as Peterson's blocking back; tight end MyCole Pruitt could see some time lining up in the backfield as well.
Wide receivers (6): Laquon Treadwell, Stefon Diggs, Jarius Wright, Adam Thielen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Charles Johnson (cut: Moritz Böhringer, Isaac Fruechte, Marken Michel, Terrell Sinkfield, Troy Stoudermire).
Böhringer's trip to the NFL from Germany made for a good story in the draft, but the receiver didn't show in OTAs or minicamp that he's ready for the league yet.
Tight ends (3): Kyle Rudolph, MyCole Pruitt, David Morgan (cut: Brian Leonhardt, Kyle Carter; PUP list: Rhett Ellison)
Morgan, a sixth-round pick out of Texas-San Antonio, did some impressive things this spring; tight ends coach Pat Shurmur said he's got more versatility than just as a blocker.
Offensive line (9): Matt Kalil, Alex Boone, John Sullivan, Brandon Fusco, Andre Smith, Joe Berger, Mike Harris, T.J. Clemmings, Willie Beavers (cut: Phil Loadholt, Nick Easton, Zac Kerin, Jeremiah Sirles, Austin Shepherd, Carter Bykowski).
This will be the fiercest position battle on the roster, and several of the Vikings' cuts could wind up on the practice squad. If Loadholt goes, though, the Vikings could cut him early to give him a chance to catch on elsewhere.
Defensive line (8): Everson Griffen, Sharrif Floyd, Linval Joseph, Brian Robison, Danielle Hunter, Tom Johnson, Shamar Stephen, Justin Trattou.
This could be the end of the line for 2014 third-round pick Scott Crichton, who hasn't shown much in the NFL to this point.
Linebackers (7): Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks, Emmanuel Lamur, Chad Greenway, Edmond Robinson, Audie Cole, Kentrell Brothers (cut: Brandon Watts, Jake Ganus).
Greenway will be on the roster in what figures to be his final season, but he could have to fight for playing time after the Vikings signed Lamur to play weak-side linebacker.
Defensive backs (10): Xavier Rhodes, Terence Newman, Captain Munnerlyn, Trae Waynes, Mackensie Alexander, Marcus Sherels, Harrison Smith, Andrew Sendejo, Michael Griffin, Anthony Harris (cut: Melvin White, Tre Roberson, Keith Baxter, Jabari Price, Antone Exum, Jayron Kearse).
The competition at this position could force the Vikings to try and sneak a few young players through to their practice squad. White, Price, Exum or Kearse could certainly challenge for roster spots.
Specialists (3): Blair Walsh, Jeff Locke, Kevin McDermott.
The Vikings don't seem in a rush to bring in competition for Locke, but the punter needs to have a solid year to earn a new contract.
