Jason Peters, Malcolm Jenkins among 10 Eagles out for preseason opener

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles will be without 10 injured players for their preseason opener Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Doug Pederson said Tuesday that starters Jason Peters, Malcolm Jenkins, Jordan Matthews and Mychal Kendricks will be held out of the game.

The Eagles will also be without defensive end Marcus Smith (concussion), running back Wendell Smallwood (quadriceps), defensive tackle Mike Martin (knee) and cornerback JaCorey Shepherd (knee). Rookie wide receivers Marcus Johnson and Hunter Sharp will not play. Their injuries have not been announced.

Pederson said Peters will dress for the game and take part in warm-ups, but will not play due to a quadriceps injury. Matt Tobin will start at left tackle.

That's somewhat surprising, since the Eagles signed right tackle Lane Johnson to a contract extension designed to compensate him fairly when he moves to left tackle. Pederson said it was more important to leave Johnson at right tackle, so he can remain comfortable and develop chemistry with right guard Brandon Brooks.

"Just stay comfortable and, right now, Matt Tobin is doing a good job at left tackle," Pederson said. "There's no need, in this first game, to make that adjustment.

"There would be a time to [move Johnson]." Pederson said. "This could be a time to give him some work over there. We'll definitely keep that open."

Jenkins injured a hamstring in practice last week and hasn't practice since. Pederson said that Jaylen Watkins and Chris Maragos will rotate at Jenkins' spot, with Ed Reynolds also available to step in.

Kendricks injured his hamstring Sunday. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Najee Goode, Pederson said.

Matthews injured his knee in a collision with rookie cornerback Jalen Mills. Pederson said the injury was a bone bruise and that there is no damage to the ligaments in the knee.

With Matthews out, Chris Givens will take his spot in the slot.

Running back Kenjon Barner was being examined for an injury to his quadriceps, Pederson said. Barner will return punts Thursday if he's able. If not, rookie wide receiver Paul Turner will handle punts. Pederson doesn't want to expose veteran return man Darren Sproles this early in the preseason.

Both kickers, Caleb Sturgis and Cody Parkey, will get chances to kick, Pederson said.
