Jason Candle new coach at Toledo

Toledo offensive coordinator Jason Candle will be the school's new coach, sources told ESPN.

Candle has spent the past seven seasons as a Rockets assistant. He was set to join former Toledo coach Matt Campbell at Iowa State but returned to Toledo on Tuesday to meet with athletic director Mike O'Brien, a source said. WTOL television initially reported the hiring of Candle.

Toledo has scheduled a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference to introduce Candle.

O'Brien took a similar approach in 2011 after losing Tim Beckman to Illinois as he named Campbell, then the school's offensive coordinator, as head coach.

Candle and Campbell have similar backgrounds, playing together at Division III Mount Union and later coaching at the school. Candle coached wide receivers and tight ends at Toledo from 2009 to 2011 before being elevated by Campbell to offensive coordinator.
