Phillip Ely's request for sixth year of eligibility denied by NCAA

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Toledo senior Phillip Ely's appeal to receive a sixth year of eligibility has been denied by the NCAA, a source close to the quarterback told ESPN.

The NCAA's decision means Ely's final game will be Tuesday's night's 32-17 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl win over Temple.

Ely initially signed with Alabama in 2011 and redshirted his first season. He left Alabama after the 2012 season and transferred to Toledo in 2013. Ely had hoped for a sixth season because his first season at Alabama was plagued by a back injury.

Ely's junior season at Toledo was cut short by injury. He suffered a torn labrum and torn ACL in the same game against Missouri.

This season Ely started all 11 games for the Rockets, leading them to a 9-2 record.

In Tuesday's win, he threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yarder to Cody Thompson, to lead the Rockets (10-2) over Temple.
