TCU wide receiver KaVontae Turpin was arrested Sunday on a charge of assault of a family member with bodily injury, according to Tarrant County (Texas) jail records.
"He's suspended," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "My track record speaks for itself. We're gathering information. But he probably won't play against Kansas. We haven't received any information, a police report or anything. But he knows how all that goes. All of them [the players] do."
According to the arrest affidavit, police were called to a Fort Worth apartment complex at approximately 11:43 p.m. Turpin would not speak to the police officer and was placed in a squad car.
A woman, who said she had been in a relationship with Turpin for five years, was crying and told police that Turpin was angry because he thought she was sending photos of herself to other people. According to the report, the woman said Turpin grabbed her and dragged her across the parking lot. She said he slammed her to the ground and they wrestled before she got away and went to a neighbor's door and asked them to call police.
The school also put out an official statement.
"Texas Christian University is aware that one of its students was recently arrested for a reported domestic situation," spokeswoman Holly Ellman said. "The university takes these types of reports very seriously and is continuing to gather information to determine next steps. TCU expects its students to behave in an ethical manner, abide by campus policies and adhere to state and federal law. The student also may face a charge of violating the University Code of Student Conduct, the results of which are independent and separate from any legal charges."
Turpin, a senior, is one of the top returners in college football. He leads the country with almost 20 yards per punt return and a touchdown. Turpin also had a 99-yard kickoff return against Oklahoma on Saturday. Turpin has three receiving touchdowns, including one against the Sooners.
