Phil Estes steps down as Brown coach

Brown University announced football coach Phil Estes stepped down from his position after 21 seasons on Monday.

Estes, 60, was Brown's second-winningest coach at 115-94 and won three Ivy League championships, but the Bears were winless in league games and 3-17 overall the last two seasons.

"For the last 21 seasons, Phil Estes simply was Brown football," athletic director Jack Hayes said. "From Ivy League titles to national scoring records to outstanding student-athlete academic performance, the vast majority of this team's greatest accomplishments have been a direct result of his superb coaching and recruiting skills. We are tremendously thankful for his leadership and dedication."

Estes, who has the ninth-most wins in Ivy history, guided Brown to league titles in 1999, 2005 and 2008. Before Estes' arrival, the Bears won only one championship since the league's inception in 1956.
