The proposed redevelopment of Lord's later this year has received final clearance, after the MCC was granted planning permission by Westminstrer Council for the £50m project to replace the Compton and Edrich Stands.

MCC unveiled its plans, designed by architectural firm WilkinsonEyre, last year as part of the updated Masterplan for Lord's. The new three-tier stands will increase the capacity of the ground by 2500, taking the overall capacity above 30,000.

Work at the Nursery End will begin on August 24, following the the Lord's Ashes Test and Middlesex's Vitality Blast fixture against Hampshire. The stands are expected to be ready for use during the 2020 season, with new facilities including catering and lift access completed in 2021.

"MCC is delighted to receive planning permission for the redevelopment of the Compton and Edrich Stands," MCC chief executive Guy Lavender said. "We are excited to be commencing another transformational development at Lord's, and by raising the capacity to 31,000 we will be able to welcome more spectators to enjoy matches at the largest cricket ground in the country, here at the Home of Cricket.

"The redevelopment will be an outstanding addition delivering world-class facilities, ensuring that Lord's remains the finest ground in the world to watch, and play cricket."
