Deep into injury time in the season's biggest game and with La Liga hanging in the balance, who else but Messi would step up? He timed his run to perfection and swept home the game-winning goal and then, in case any home fans missed it, held up his shirt in front of 81,000 shell-shocked Madridistas to remind them who had landed that crushing blow.

GARETH BALE
No Cristiano Ronaldo? No problem. With CR7 out injured, just a handful of minutes left and the score level, Bale outpaced Marc Bartra and finished beyond Jose Manuel Pinto to score his best Madrid goal to date and clinch victory. This was one of eight goals he scored in the last 11 games of his debut season at the Bernabeu, in which he won two trophies.

CRISTIANO RONALDO
There was Mesut Ozil's fine pass and Ronaldo's imperious finish but, to savour the reason for the celebration, think of the context: It had been four years since Madrid won a Liga Clasico and, to top it off, they'd just conceded an equaliser in this game. Three minutes later, boom: Ronaldo scored the goal that effectively clinched the title.

DANI ALVES
The wonderful, buccaneer full-back Alves had tormented Madrid plenty, but it had been nine years since he scored against them. After a 2-1 win in the first leg at the Bernabeu and Pedro's opener in this match, the best goal of Alves' career should have settled it. Barcelona eventually edged through 4-3 on aggregate, highlighting the importance of this screamer.

Xavi Hernandez calls this "practically the greatest goal of all-time." After drifting past or holding off four Madrid players, Messi slide ruled a shot ball past Iker Casillas off his noticeably weaker foot, the right. This third of four Clasicos inside 18 days came at the height of the Pep Guardiola-Jose Mourinho rivalry. The roar from Barca's fans was primal.

RONALDINHO
A stunning goal on a stunning evening. With Barcelona on the way to a Liga and Champions League double, Ronaldinho was at the peak of his powers and, at the home of his club's biggest rivals, did this. It took just under 13 seconds from Barca's penalty area to score a great, "slalom" goal. And the Madrid fans stood to applaud; little wonder.

It didn't help win a league title or even secure a finish ahead of their Clasico rivals, but this magnificent free kick was part of a 3-0 rout that was Madrid's first Liga victory over Barca for four long years. Roberto Carlos' power and technique speak for themselves; how is it possible to hit the ball so hard, so far and so accurately at the same time? Incredible!
