The forward netted nine goals overall as Portugal finished third, and considering the late attacker was born in Mozambique, a case could be made that Eusebio's tournament performance in 1966 was the finest by an African player in any major international competition through history.
The outstanding match for the football legend during the tournament in England came in the quarterfinals, when he netted four as Portugal battled back from 3-0 down to beat North Korea 5-3 at Goodison Park.
It was one of the finest games in the history of the tournament - and certainly one of the finest comebacks - as the Asians sought another major scalp.
They'd already stunned Italy 1-0 at Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park following Pak Doo-ik's unforgettable opener, and appeared primed to take another major scalp after tearing into a 3-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes in Liverpool.
However, Eusebio had other ideas.
His four-goal scoring spree began in the 27th minute, and before the game reached the hour-mark, he'd added another three - including two penalties - as the Koreans had no answer to his speed, intelligence and movement.
The Black Panther had already won the Ballon d'Or in 1965 and lifted the European Cup four years beforehand. However, this could have been the 11-time Portuguese champion's finest hour, as he shifted through the gears and North Korea visibly tired.
The Selecao das Quinas' run in the tournament would ultimately end when they were defeated by hosts England in the semifinal, but Eusebio's electric contributions to this competition would live long in the memory.
The iconic frontman passed away in Lisbon in January 2014, aged 71.
To this day, Africa has never produced another player to have taken the World Cup like Eusebio did.
