Kevin Anderson seeded fifth for US Open

Tennis

South African tennis star Kevin Anderson has been seeded No. 5 for the US Open which gets underway next Monday.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced the seedings for the main draws of the men's and women's singles on Tuesday, and have confirmed that Anderson will retain his ATP world ranking for the tournament.

The big-hitting 32-year-old only reclaimed a place in the world's top five on Monday following his run to the last 16 of last week's Cincinnati Masters, where he was beaten by Belgium's David Goffin.

Anderson will be confident of his chances of success at the US Open for two reasons; he reached the Wimbledon final last month and was also runner-up at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center a year ago, when he lost to Rafael Nadal of Spain.

Nadal, of course, is the current world number 1 and has rightfully been seeded number 1. He is followed by five-time US Open champion Roger Federer, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro and Alexander Zverev from Germany while Anderson's Wimbledon vanquisher Novak Djokovic -- and first-ever Career Golden Master -- has to settle for sixth. Andy Murray, who is conservatively managing his return to action following hip surgery, has not been handed one of the 32 seedings.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams has been seeded No. 17, nine spots higher than her current ranking of No. 26, but one place below her older sister Venus.

The 23-time major champion (who was runner-up at Wimbledon) will be aiming for her seventh US Open title -- and first since her record-breaking five-consecutive run ended in 2014 -- but will only find out her likely path on Thursday, when the draw for the tournament is released.

Romania's Simona Halep is seeded number 1 for the women's singles, with Caroline Wozniacki, defending US Open champion Sloane Stephens and Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber rounding off the top four.
