Sprint sensation Luke Davids led the charge on Monday night by storming to gold as Team South Africa picked up two medals on Day 9 of the IOC Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Davids, who had clocked 10.56 in stage one, raced over the line in 10.15 with the benefit of a +3.4m/s tailwind in stage two of the Boys' 100m event.

With placings calculated by aggregate results of both stages, Davids earned top spot on the podium, finishing well ahead of Nigerian athlete Alaba Akintola, who clocked 10.76 and 10.24.

In Stage 2 of the Girls' Shot Put, Dane Roets launched a 17.34m heave, going four centimetres further than she did in Stage 1 to clinch the bronze medal. Chinese athlete Li Xinhui won gold with best attempts of 18.42m and 18.33m.

In other disciplines, distance runner Carmie Prinsloo took 13th place in the Girls' 4km Cross Country in 13:33 after producing a fine performance to finish fourth in the 3 000m race on the track last week. Nicole Louw, who was seventh in the 1 500m event, took 25th position in the Cross Country contest in 14:02.

Jason Tito ended 14th in the Boys' Long Jump. Having cleared 7.59m in the first stage, he was unable to get on the board on Stage 2. Luhan Potgieter's best attempt of 16.52m saw him finish 15th in the Boys' Shot Put following his 17.35m effort in the opening round.

Bianca Erasmus cleared 1.63m, and after reaching a height of 1.65m in the High Jump in Stage 1. She settled for 16th position.

In previous performances on Sunday, Francois Prinsloo produced a 56.63m heave in the second stage of the Boys Discus Throw, which was good enough for ninth place, while Kayla van der Berg clocked 14.13 in the Girls 100m Hurdles to grab 11th spot overall.

There was some disappointment for promising middle-distance runner Prudence Sekgodiso, who stepped out of her lane and was disqualified in the second stage of the Girls 800m.
