Manziel makes AAF debut for Memphis Express

Johnny Manziel made his debut in the Alliance of American Football on Sunday in the Memphis Express' 31-25 overtime win over the Birmingham Iron.

Manziel, who signed with the Express last week, entered the game in the second quarter with his team losing 16-8 to the Iron. Quarterback Brandon Silvers started the game.

The former Heisman Trophy winner scrambled for 13 yards on his first play from scrimmage. Six plays later, Manziel connected on a 36-yard pass to Alton Howard, but the drive stalled in the red zone and the Express missed a 34-yard field goal.

The home fans, who had been chanting "We want Johnny!" before Manziel entered, booed heavily when Silvers returned to play the next series. The Express went three-and-out.

Manziel took over again in the next series and presided over two three-and-outs, as well as a failed two-point conversion attempt following a defensive touchdown, before getting benched in favor of Silvers in the fourth quarter.

Silvers led the Express down the field for a touchdown to tie the game with 24 seconds left and then won it in overtime with a 10-yard touchdown pass to give Memphis its second victory on the season.

Manziel finished 3-of-5 passing for 48 yards with two rushes for 20 yards in his debut.

After the game, Manziel said he hopes Memphis' fans will give Silvers a chance.

"I can't imagine how awesome of a feeling that was for Brandon tonight," Manziel said, according to the Commercial-Appeal. "I don't go out and round people up and say, 'Will you guys go out and chant, 'We want Johnny' all day?' To put that pressure on him and him have to go out there and deal with that and handle it the way he did was top notch. I'm kind of sick of that a little bit. Let it play out."
