Charlotte 49ers

Drew Pescaro, a sportswriter for the Niner Times, UNC Charlotte's student-run newspaper, was shot when a gunman with a pistol opened fire in an on-campus classroom building Tuesday, killing two and wounding four.

The newspaper tweeted that Pescaro had surgery and was in stable condition.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said late Tuesday that a 22-year-old man was in custody after being disarmed by officers responding to a report of shots fired late in the afternoon on the final day of classes at the university.

Police said two people were found dead at the scene and two others sustained life-threatening injuries. Authorities did not release names of the victims.

Pescaro is a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, which first tweeted that Pescaro was injured in the shooting.

According to his Facebook page, Pescaro is from Rutland, Massachusetts, and he serves as a video assistant for the UNC Charlotte football team.
