Singapore to play Lebanon, Bahrain at National Stadium

Singapore will face Lebanon in a home friendly next month at the National Stadium as a warm up for the crunch AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bahrain.

Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced that the Lions will play the Lebanese on Nov. 9, five days before the clash with group leaders Bahrain, also at the National Stadium.

Singapore's hopes of advancing from Group E are all but over, and it would take an extremely improbable combination of results in the final two matches for them to have any chance.

Following last week's 2-1 defeat in Turkmenistan, they sit bottom of the group, four points behind Chinese Taipei and five behind Bahrain and Turkmenistan. It means that victories in their final two fixtures are necessary, while results in other games must also go their way.

But the FAS is keen to see V. Sundramoorthy's side finish the campaign on a high, and called on the fans to help lift the team in both home matches next month.

"We have always said that we want to make the National Stadium the Home of our Lions, so we are happy to be playing these two matches at the National Stadium," FAS President Lim Kia Tong said.

"The national team's performances have been improving, although the results might not have gone their way. They need the fans' strong, consistent and vociferous support, because that will determine the outcome of the battle.

"I look forward to seeing the stadium filled with passionate supporters. Let's reinvigorate the Kallang Roar and inspire the Lions to victory. We must stand for the Lions as a nation."

Following the match against Bahrain, Singapore's final qualifier is away at Chinese Taipei next year. A victory next month, coupled with a Turkmenistan win over Chinese Taipei, would still leave the Lions in with an outside chance.
