A long list of Mexico's top talents are making names for themselves at clubs abroad. With several key figures playing week in and week out in a number of top European leagues, keeping track of all the high-profile stars can at times be daunting.
In order to help keep tabs on those across the Atlantic, we've created a weekly award that will be given to the most outstanding player. Along with a few honorable mentions -- and a "dishonorable mention" prize -- here are the noteworthy performances from Mexican players in Europe last week.
Europeo of the Week: Raul Jimenez, FW, Wolves (England)
Game after game, Jimenez continues to excel in England for Wolves. During last Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea, it was the Mexican who opened up the scoresheet for the away side that nearly gained a win. A good combination with Diogo Jota helped the striker find the back of the net in the 56th minute of Wolves' recent tie.
That goal is now the 100th in Jimenez's senior career. Most importantly, it is his 12th this season for Wolves, which means that he is one away from becoming the club's highest goalscorer in a single EPL tournament. Looking back at one of his fellow countrymen, Jimenez is also one goal away from reaching Javier Hernandez's tally of 13 with Manchester United --- "Chicharito's" best EPL season to date --- from 2010-11.
The added good news for Jimenez: He still has eight games left in the EPL schedule and an FA Cup run. Assuming he keeps up his momentum and his partnership with Jota up top, there's no reason why the 27-year-old won't continue to amass at least a few more goals. At the very least, there's also no reason why Wolves shouldn't shell out some big cash for the player on loan from Benfica either.
Honorable mention: Jesus Corona, MF, Porto (Portugal)
"Tecatito" has done an excellent job of maintaining numerous good performances abroad. Just a few days after helping carry Porto into the quarterfinal stage of the UEFA Champions League, the winger stepped up with an assist in Sunday's 2-1 win over Feirense.
Lost in the Mexican soccer storylines of younger options like Diego Lainez and Hirving Lozano, Corona has quietly taken charge with Porto this season. No longer on the fringes as an inconsistent figure, the player has established himself as a reliable starter. His team appears to recognize his efforts as well. Last Friday, the Portuguese club extended the Mexican's contract with the squad to 2022.
Honorable mention: Diego Reyes, DF, Leganes (Spain)
The move to Spain has already paid off for the player on loan from Fenerbahce. Once an overlooked backup in Tukey, Reyes has now collected two starts in Legane's last two matches. Following the 1-0 win over Levante last Monday, the defender was included in the XI that narrowly lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
In the latest defeat from the weekend, Reyes excelled as a member of a three-man backline that nearly shutout the current 2nd-placed team. The Mexican was highly involved with a number of interceptions and clearances for Leganes.
Dishonorable mention: Hector Moreno, DF, Real Sociedad (Spain)
Back in the starting XI for the first time since January, Moreno was a part of a Real Sociedad defense that allowed five goals last Sunday. During the weekend's 5-2 thrashing by Sevilla, there was little that Moreno could do to stop the attacking onslaught by the opposition. After recently returning from injury and struggling in his first game back, it's still up in the air if he'll be given another start in the upcoming match against Levante this Friday.
