Flamengo topple Corinthians, win third Copa Sao Paulo Juniors title

Flamengo toppled defending champion Corinthians 4-3 in a penalty shootout to win the Copa Sao Paulo juniors tournament on Monday.

The victory marked the Rio de Janeiro club's third triumph in the prestigious under-20 tournament. Corinthians were in search of their 10th title.

Gabriel Vasconcelos and Matheus Pereira gave the Sao Paulo club an early two-goal lead with classy strikes in the 19th and 25th minute respectively.

But after the break, Flamengo would quickly equalise through a Matheus Trindade header from a Matheus Savio corner three minutes in, then a well-placed Matheus Savio first-time finish from midfielder Cafu's ball behind the defence.

The game then went to penalties, where Matheus Pereira, Gabriel Vasconcelos and Claudinho's misses for Corinthians set the stage for Flamengo midfielder Patrick to net the title-winning free kick in front of more than 29,000 at the Pacaembu Stadium.
