Georgia hire ex-Slovakia boss Vladimir Weiss as new coach

Georgia have appointed former Slovakia coach Vladimir Weiss on a two-year contract after failing to qualify for the European Championship.

Weiss was in talks with Georgia for a year, the Georgian football federation said, and his contract will be heavily based on bonuses for achieving certain performance targets.

Weiss, who said he wants to "stay for a long time'" with Georgia, has the task of rebuilding a team which finished fifth in their Euro 2016 qualifying group under previous coach Kakhaber Tskhadadze, ahead of only Gibraltar.

Weiss has managed in Russia and Kazakhstan, but is best known for taking Slovakia to the 2010 World Cup, where they beat Italy.

His first competitive fixture in charge will be in September, when Georgia faces Austria in its first 2018 World Cup qualifier.
