MLS deadline deals: Orlando City gets Dillon Powers from Rapids for Luis Gil

Orlando City and the Colorado Rapids swapped a pair of midfielders just prior to the close of the MLS transfer window, with the Lions acquiring Dillon Powers in exchange for Luis Gil.

The move is the second in four months for Gil. The first was a loan from Liga MX side Queretaro to Orlando, with the Lions sending $100,000 in targeted allocation money to Real Salt Lake, who had held Gil's MLS rights.

That payment wasn't due until 2018, and with the loan still in place, it is now the Rapids who are on the hook for the TAM that must be sent to RSL. As a way of compensating Colorado for that outlay, Orlando also sent $100,000 of TAM to the Rapids.

Both Gil and Powers are once promising players who have seen the careers stall. Powers was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2013, but has started just 11 of the Rapids 21 games so far this season, notching a solitary assist.

Gil dazzled during his early years with Real Salt Lake, as well with the U.S. U-20 national team. But he had already plateaued during the latter part of his six-year spell with RSL, when he then joined Queretaro in 2015.

He found playing time difficult to come by in Mexico, making just 14 league and cup appearances during his time there. That resulted in his initial loan deal to Orlando where he made 18 league and cup appearances.

In other MLS deadline moves agreed before the window closed on Wednesday night:

D.C. United continued its squad overhaul with the addition of U.S. midfielder Paul Arriola from Tijuana as a designated player.

Ethan Finlay, another U.S. international, joined Minnesota United in a trade with Columbus Crew SC. The Loons also acquired defender/midfielder Jose Leiton, in a deal announced by his former club, Herediano.

Krisztian Nemeth is returning to MLS, but with the New England Revolution, rather than his former team Sporting Kansas City, multiple sources told ESPN's Taylor Twellman.

The Vancouver Whitecaps traded defender Christian Dean to Chicago in exchange for $50,000 in GAM, with another $50,000 headed to the Whitecaps if Dean reaches performance incentives.

The Whitecaps then acquired defender Aaron Maund from RSL in exchange for a third-round pick in 2018, and later announced the signing of Egyptian midfielder Aly Ghazal, who had his contract with Chinese Super League side Guizhou Zhicheng terminated by mutual agreement in July.

Minnesota loaned Rasmus Schuller to Finnish side HJK Helsinki. Schuller has struggled with injury during the Loons' inaugural season, making just seven appearances, four of them starts.

FC Dallas acquired Venezuelan international Luis Gonzalez from Monagas Sport Club.

The Seattle Sounders added midfielder Calum Mallace in a trade with Montreal, giving up their fourth-round draft pick in 2019.
