The President of Malawi's FA, Walter Nyamilandu, has been elected as a FIFA Council member for Africa's Anglophone region. Nyamilandu received 35 votes against Daniel Alexander Jordaan's 18 during the CAF Extraordinary Assembly held at the Egypt Hall, Savoy Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt on Sunday. Earlier the President of the Kenya FA, Nick Mwendwa, and his counterpart from the Seychelles - Elvis Chetty - pulled out before the race, which was left to three candidates. The election was forced to the second round after Nyamilandu failed to win by over 50% in the first round. He received 23 votes, while Jordaan had 16 and Tanzania's Leodegar Chilla Tenga collected 14. "I am excited to be elected on the FIFA Council because it has always been my wish. I am a former football and now been in football leadership for 14 years," the 46-year old Nyamilandu told KweséESPN on Sunday, Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino welcomed Nyamilandu to the FIFA Council. "You have come in not only to serve Africa but to fight for football development in the world," said Infantino who was accompanied to the Assembly by secretary general Fatma Samoura, told the media. The position of Council member for Africa's Anglophone region became vacant after former Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi stepped down after allegations of bribery and corruption. The other members of the FIFA Council from Africa include Ahmad Ahmad (CAF President), Camara Almany Kabele (Guinea), Abo Rida Hany (Egypt), Lydia Nsekera (Burundi), Tarek Bouchamaoui (Tunisia),and Constant Omari (DR Congo).
