Liga MX's Chivas fire Jose Cardozo as manager after crucial loss

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Jose Cardozo is no longer the head coach of Liga MX side Chivas, the club confirmed Sunday, after the team lost 2-1 to Pumas earlier in the day.

Cardozo took over from Matias Almeyda on June 12, 2018, but the team failed to reach the Apertura playoffs and is currently down in 12th position, four points off the playoff spots.

"After carrying out an analysis of the team's performance in the 2019 Clausura, the results haven't gone in line with the stated objectives at the start of the season and performances have noticeably gotten worse," read the statement from the club announcing Cardozo's departure.

Chivas have won only once in their last nine Liga MX games and the defeat to Pumas was a severe blow to their playoff chances.

"I don't [feel] safe and even less because of how we played," Cardozo had said after the defeat. "It's impossible to feel safe because the team didn't play to the level that we want."

"[Chivas were] a team without an idea, without possession of the ball," he continued.

Former player Albert Coyote will oversee the first team on an interim basis, with names such as John Van't Schip and even San Jose Earthquakes coach Almeyda mentioned as possible replacements.

Chivas face Lobos BUAP next Saturday and will make their debut in the International Champions Cup in the summer with games against Benfica, Roma and Atletico Madrid.
