Peruvian top-flight match finishes in draw after being suspended due to violence

A Peruvian football match that was suspended on Sunday because of fighting between fans and gunshots resumed on Monday and ended in a draw.

The match between Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal was finished behind closed doors with the hosts scoring to level at 2-2.

Sporting Cristal was leading 2-1 Sunday when the match was suspended on Sunday with 25 minutes to play. Four people were wounded by gunshots outside the stadium during the match.

Peruvian interior minister Mauro Medina said the incident happened after rival groups of Alianza Lima fans clashed with each other. Police used tear gas to stop the fight.

The match was a Clasico in the Peruvian league and the country's national team manager Ricardo Gareca was in attendance when the game was halted.

It was the second incident of violence outside Alianza Lima's stadium in as many weeks.

On Sept. 10 at least one person was wounded and several were arrested after some of the club's fans clashed with members of an evangelical church in a dispute over who owns a sprawling plaza in front of the main entry to the stadium.

Alianza Lima and the religious group El Aposento Alto both claim to own a swath of land next to the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, where the club has set up installations used for storage and parking.

The club is one of the oldest and and most successful in Peruvian football, winning 23 national league titles since it was founded in 1901.
