Jefferson Savarino's brace leads Real Salt Lake in 6-0 rout of Colorado Rapids

Jefferson Savarino scored a goal in each half to lead an offensive flurry that lifted Real Salt Lake to a 6-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo.

RSL claimed the Rocky Mountain Cup for a third consecutive season after going unbeaten in three matches against Colorado this season. Salt Lake (12-10-5, 41 points) also earned back-to-back road wins for the first time in 2018.

Salt Lake wasted no time jumping out in front of the Rapids. Colorado (6-14-6, 24 points) had any hopes of a comeback dashed by a pair of first-half red cards.

RSL got on the board behind Damir Kreilach's goal in the 6th minute. Joao Plata tracked down a pass from Kyle Beckerman and snagged the ball before it reached the end line. Plata cut it back to Kreilach, who was trailing the play toward the left post, and he blasted a shot inside the right post.

Savarino made it a two-goal lead in the 33rd minute. Three defenders converged on Albert Rusnak and managed to poke the ball away. Savarino latched onto it and fired a shot right at Tim Howard. The ball bounced off Howard's glove and across the line.

Things got tougher for Colorado when the Rapids went down two men before halftime. Niki Jackson was shown a red card in the 9th minute for headbutting Rusnak. Bismark Boateng was sent off for a serious foul in the 45th minute.

Savarino earned the brace in the 58th minute when he fired a shot outside the box and threaded it inside the right post. Plata extended the lead to 4-0 in the 69th minute when he converted a second-chance goal. Howard blocked his first attempt, and the rebound went right back to Plata.

Corey Baird tacked on a fifth RSL goal in the 74th minute. Then, Rusnak picked the ball out of the air and drove in a left-footer for goal No. 6 in the 86th minute.
