Moura hits hat trick as Spurs brush Huddersfield aside to go third

Tottenham moved above London rivals Chelsea and into third place in the Premier League table as a Lucas Moura hat trick and a goal from Victor Wanyama gave them a 4-0 home win over relegated Huddersfield.

Wanyama rounded keeper Ben Hamer to slide Spurs in front after 24 dominant minutes, Moura doubling the lead with an angled finish soon afterwards.

Spurs won a dangerous free kick in the opening moments, Fernando Llorente playing in Moura, who was fouled by Jonathan Hogg, but Christian Eriksen's strike hit the wall.

Moments later there were appeals for a penalty when Hamer appeared to pull Moura's shirt, but play was waved on.

Wanyama fired wide as Spurs continued to ask questions, and then a Moura header across the six-yard box was just too high for Llorente to direct it on target.

Although the home side were dominating, Huddersfield were beginning to restrict their opportunities -- but that changed as the game's first goal arrived after 24 minutes.

Ben Davies played the ball to Llorente and, when the striker was unable to get it under control it ran through to Wanyama, who got away from Hamer and opened the scoring.

Three minutes later, Spurs had complete control when Moussa Sissoko found Moura, whose dipping shot bounced through the goalkeeper's dive.

But on the half-hour, Huddersfield should have hit back in their first meaningful attack, Jon Stankovic sending an effort wide from a corner.

Llorente could have made it three before the break, finding space inside the area but seeing his shot blocked, and he directed an angled header just wide soon afterwards.

The striker hit the bar in the opening moments of the second half, Davies drilling wide from the edge of the area as the Spurs attacks continued.

Moura tested Hamer with a low drive and Huddersfield brought on striker Steve Mounie for Erik Durm as they looked for a route back into the game.

They could have had one when Grant raced into the area but was unable to beat Hugo Lloris, but the action soon switched back to the other end where Llorente's shot was blocked.

Sissoko made way for Oliver Skipp as Spurs made their first change of the afternoon, the home side almost conceding moments later when Hogg's cross was headed wide by Mounie.

Grant then came close for the visitors when he lashed over and Lloris tipped a curling free kick from Juninho Bacuna onto the bar and over.

Aaron Mooy came on for Stankovic in another change for the visitors, Danny Rose replacing Vertonghen and Son Heung-Min on for Llorente as Spurs also made late switches.

And they rounded off the afternoon in style, Moura controlling and finishing superbly after being found inside the area by Eriksen with three minutes left and completing his treble with an angled shot in stoppage time.

Lucas was understandably all smiles at the end and even brought his one-year-old son Miguel on to the pitch after the final whistle to the delight of the home fans.

"It was very emotional for him," manager Mauricio Pochettino, who made seven changes to his team, told reporters. "It's his first hat-trick in Europe. It's a nice moment for him to share this with his son and his family.

"When you have 25 players they need to have the opportunity to play. I'm happy for Lucas. His hat-trick is going to help his confidence. We have a very tough period ahead. We need all the players and with confidence it's going to be better."
