Maximilian Philipp scores twice but Borussia Dortmund fall to Benfica in shootout

Maximilian Philipp scored twice but Borussia Dortmund fell to Benfica after penalties in Christian Pulisic's return to Pennsylvania in an International Champions Cup match on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old former Freiburg winger collected goals two minutes apart in the first half to get the Germans going early. But Andre Almeida and Alfa Semedo scored after the break for the Portuguese giants and pushed the game to penalties.

Philipp opened his account in the 20th minute, poking home Mario Gotze's low cross from the left, and then added his second not long after with a volleyed finish of a beautifully worked team move that started in Dortmund's own half.

Benfica struck back six minutes after half-time through Almeida, who latched onto a Pizzi through ball and fired across goalkeeper Marwin Hitz and inside the far post.

Semedo tied the score 18 minutes later when -- after seeing his first shot deflected -- he pushed the ball into the box and slid his second attempt into the net.

Neither team could find a winner, however, and the game went to a shootout where Benfica won 4-3 to take the points.
