Stefan Effenberg sacked as SC Paderborn manager

Stefan Effenberg has been sacked as the coach of 2. Bundesliga club SC Paderborn as they fight to avoid relegation.

With only 10 games left in the second tier, Paderborn have dropped to 17th in the standings and are two points away from reaching the relegation playoff spot.

On Wednesday, the club announced the sacking of former Bayern Munich captain Effenberg, who was appointed in October 2015.

Since winning his first two matches, the club have gone without a win in 13 competitive matches since losing 7-1 at Borussia Dortmund in in the DFB Pokal in late October.

"The SCP has finished working with head coach Stefan Effenberg," the club said in a brief press release, published at four minutes to midnight on Wednesday.

Despite a disastrous winter training camp as well as the poor run of results, the club had backed Effenberg until this week, when the former Germany star produced more negative headlines for failing to produce a valid coaching licence.

In an interview published in Bild on Thursday, the club president Wolfgang Finke had backed Effenberg, but the tabloid reported that the coach was sacked hours later via a a phone call from Mallorca.
