Landon Donovan nears Leon debut after coming out of retirement

Landon Donovan's debut with Leon could come as early as this weekend, with the former U.S. international ready to travel with the squad to face Monterrey on Saturday if required.

"I'm feeling good, it's the coach's decision if I travel to Monterrey or not, but I'm improving every day and, if it is a possibility, I'll be ready because I want to give something back to the people on the pitch," Donovan told reporters in Leon on Monday.

The American was officially unveiled as a Leon player on Jan. 22 and has been training with the squad following 14 months in retirement.

The more likely date for the 35-year-old's Liga MX debut would seem to be round six of the 2018 Clausura, when his team hosts Puebla in Estadio Leon on Feb. 10.

There is also the possibility that Donovan could get his first minutes with the new club in the Copa MX match next Tuesday against Venados FC in Merida.

Leon started the first three round of games during this season brightly, but suffered a shock 4-0 home loss to Necaxa last weekend.
