The Roar trailed 2-0 to the Mariners in extra-time of the grand final two weeks later before they scored twice in the dying minutes before they claimed the championship in a penalty shootout.

After they secured a record 20 wins in the regular season to eclipse Brisbane's record points tally, Sydney thrashed Perth 3-0 in the semi-finals before they fought back from one goal down in the grand final against Melbourne Victory to seal the championship with a 4-2 penalty shootout win.

After again recording 20 wins in the regular season to secure back-to-back Premiers Plates, the Sky Blues were heavily tipped to claim consecutive championships.
