Atdhe Nuhiu hat-trick inspires Wednesday to resounding victory over Norwich

Sheffield Wednesday ended the season with a thumping 5-1 victory over Norwich, with Atdhe Nuhiu scoring a hat-trick.Fernando Forestieri and Frederico Venancio also scored for the hosts while Timm Klose was on target for Norwich late on.Forestieri put an early chance wide following a good build-up involving Lucas Joao and Nuhiu.Norwich boss Daniel Farke was forced to make a change in the 11th minute when James Maddison made way after receiving lengthy treatment, with Ivo Pinto coming on in his place. The first opening for the visitors came when a loose ball fell to Josh Murphy whose shot was deflected wide.Nuhiu opened the scoring in the 14th minute, climbing high at the far post to meet an Adam Reach cross, heading beyond Angus Gunn.Forestieri added a second goal on the half-hour mark, nipping in to intercept an under-hit back pass from Christoph Zimmermann and slotting the ball past the exposed Gunn.Nelson Oliveira put an effort narrowly wide as the visitors looked to respond.Towards the end of the half, Wednesday skipper Glenn Loovens left the field to applause, bringing the curtain down on his spell at Hillsborough, with Jordan Thorniley taking his place.Pinto went down injured after the referee blew his whistle for half-time but he was able to continue following the break after receiving treatment. As the visitors looked to pull a goal back early in the second half, Tom Trybull fired a 20-yard effort straight at keeper Cameron Dawson.Norwich were playing some neat, passing football at this stage of the match, without posing a real attacking threat.Venancio put Wednesday further ahead with his first goal for the club after 58 minutes, finding the net with a well-placed volley from Reach's cross. Two minutes later, Nuhiu scored his second of the afternoon to make it 4-0, capitalising on a defensive mix-up and tapping into an empty net following Joey Pelupessy's cross, after Gunn and Zimmermann collided. The Norwich pair were both able to continue after receiving medical attention.Oliveira had a shot blocked and with the Wednesday defenders unable to clear the danger, Moritz Leitner wasted a good chance, heading wide from Pinto's cross.Klose (83) scored a consolation goal for Norwich, beating Dawson with a low shot from inside the area.Forestieri found a way through late on but he was denied by a brave block from Gunn.Nuhiu then went close in the 89th minute, powering in a header which forced an excellent save from Gunn.Nuhiu was not to be denied his hat-trick, however, scoring from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Forestieri was fouled inside the area by Jamal Lewis.

Atdhe Nuhiu downs Leeds at Elland Road

Atdhe Nuhiu scored a stoppage-time winner to hand Sheffield Wednesday a 2-1 victory over Yorkshire rivals Leeds.Substitute Jay-Roy Grot appeared to have earned Leeds a share of the spoils with his first goal for the club late on but there was still time for Nuhiu to snatch Wednesday's first win at Elland Road since 2007.Nuhiu had earlier broken the deadlock after a goalless first half that underlined how far the two sides had fallen in the past year.Leeds and Wednesday were among the Championship's top sides last season but have both endured miserable campaigns. The Yorkshire rivals went into the derby with only one win each in 2018 and there was not much in the way of quality in an even opening 45 minutes.Wednesday enjoyed the brighter start with Adam Reach twice testing Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, playing his third game since replacing Felix Wiedwald. The young stopper first kept out a low effort with his feet after Reach had been played in by Lucas Joao with Leeds stretched and then pushed a long-range strike behind.United had been tidy in their build-up play but did not threaten until the 25th minute when Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith denied Caleb Ekuban from a well-worked free-kick routine. The Leeds striker should have tucked that chance away and was guilty of spurning another good opportunity as he blazed over unmarked after a corner had been headed back into the box.Wednesday came through Leeds' best spell of the half unscathed and almost took the lead in stoppage time when Sam Hutchinson - making his first appearance since December - nodded home only to be denied by the offside flag.A half-time snow storm left a light covering on the pitch and Leeds made the quicker adjustment to the tricky conditions. Gjanni Alioski shot over from the edge of the box and Pablo Hernandez sent a free-kick into the side-netting as he tried to catch out Wildsmith.Nuhiu came closer with a 25-yard strike that landed on top of Peacock-Farrell's goal before Leeds again threatened through Gaetano Berardi's curling effort. But it was Wednesday who took the lead on 72 minutes when Nuhiu finished from close range after Reach's header from Jack Hunt's cross had come back off the right-hand post.Hernandez had a shot saved by the legs of Wildsmith as Leeds sought an immediate response. It appeared Wednesday had the points in the bag as snow began to fall again only for Grot to nod home Hernandez's cross from two yards three minutes from time to finally break his duck on his 18th Leeds appearance. But the visitors were not to be denied, Nuhiu outmuscling Matthew Pennington as they chased a through ball before beating Peacock-Farrell with a composed finish.

Sub Aaron Wilbraham's nicks late point for Bolton to add to Wednesday's woes

Sheffield Wednesday conceded a last-gasp equaliser as their struggles continued with a 1-1 draw against Bolton. A 78th-minute goal from George Boyd looked to have won it for the Owls, but Aaron Wilbraham popped up in stoppage time to salvage a point for the Trotters. The opening exchanges showed plenty of signs of a game being played between two sides in the lower reaches of the Sky Bet Championship table, with a first half dominated by sloppy possession and missed opportunities. Adam Le Fondre was denied brilliantly by Tom Lees in the opening quarter of the first half, the Wednesday defender making a perfectly timed challenge to stop a shot on goal. But that chance seemed to spark the hosts into life. Jack Hunt had a brilliant opportunity on 20 minutes as space opened up on the right side of the penalty area, but he pulled his shot horribly off target. Atdhe Nuhiu was next to go close for Wednesday when he had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes. He twisted and turned inside the box after being found by Adam Reach, but out came Ben Alnwick in the Bolton goal to deny the striker. Alnwick's stop had kept the scores level and Joe Wildsmith was not about to change that. Sammy Ameobi's cross from the right was met by the head of Will Buckley for Bolton, but he was superbly denied by a strong hand from the Wednesday keeper on 38 minutes. It was Buckley who again looked lively in the second half for the visitors. Five minutes after the restart he found space in the box but his shot was straight at Wildsmith. The Trotters could have found themselves in front on more than one occasion. A Bolton corner found its way to Derik Osede just after the hour mark but he failed to make any meaningful contact when in a great position. A minute later Ameobi saw his shot on the turn saved. Nuhiu provided evidence of signs of life in the Owls attack, going close as the game drifted into the final 20 minutes. However, his header bounced just wide. That chance was the boost Wednesday needed and they were soon in front, making the visitors pay for missed opportunities. On 78 minutes Lucas Joao played in Boyd, who darted into the penalty area and then fired a shot across goal which beat Alnwick to make it 1-0.But Bolton rescued a point in dramatic fashion, with the game moving into stoppage time. A cross from the right was met by the head of substitute Wilbraham. He got up above his man and was able to make it 1-1 to inflict more frustration on Wednesday as it finished all square at Hillsborough.

Waghorn's superb free-kick late on sealed victory for Mick McCarthy's men.Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay made six changes to his starting line-up following Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Bristol City.It was a very quiet opening with neither side posing a serious attacking threat early on.Ipswich's Mustapha Carayol and Jonas Knudsen combined on the left wing with the latter sending over a cross to the far post which forced keeper Joe Wildsmith to punch the ball clear.Carayol was involved again when he laid the ball off to Waghorn, who shot wide.Wednesday's Jacob Butterfield touched a free-kick to Adam Reach whose effort from distance went well wide.Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy was forced to make a change in the 25th minute when Carayol went off injured with Freddie Sears taking his place.Wednesday's Atdhe Nuhiu was denied by keeper Bartosz Bialkowski who made a stunning reflex save to keep out the striker's close-range volley. When Waghorn threatened at the other end, he failed to make proper contact and Wildsmith gathered the ball comfortably.Knudsen tried an effort from distance which was deflected wide. The resulting corner was only half cleared and the ball fell to Cameron Carter-Vickers whose well-struck drive flashed just wide of Wildsmith's left-hand post.Ipswich were then caught on the break with Butterfield playing the ball through to Nuhiu who saw his shot from inside the area deflected off-target.Waghorn struck in the 51st minute, firing in from close range after a Sears cross was headed back across the face of goal by Callum Connolly.Wildsmith made a superb save to prevent the hosts going further behind, turning a header from Sears over the bar.Wednesday had a penalty appeal turned down after Joao went down in the area following a challenge from Carter-Vickers.Sears threatened to find a way through when a back-pass was under-hit, but Wildsmith did well to force the striker wide and the chance was gone.Nuhiu shot wide before Joao (69) equalised with a fine solo effort, producing some neat skill to hold off a couple of defenders as he advanced into the area before slotting the ball past Bialkowski.Bialkowski then had to be alert to beat Joao to the ball, making an important clearance.Waghorn scored the winner in the 83rd minute, curling a free-kick from just outside the right-hand side of the area into the far corner of the net.
