Ex-New York Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch hired to lead RB Salzburg next season

Former New York Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch will take over as the new head coach of RB Salzburg, the Austrian club announced Monday.

Marsch will take over the club next season after working this year for German club RB Leipzig, where he is an assistant.

The 45-year-old has signed a three-year deal and will replace Marco Rose, who will move to Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.

"I am really pleased and feel honoured to be able to work for this fantastic club as their next coach," Marsch said.

Having joined New York Red Bulls in January 2015, Marsch was named MLS Coach of the Year later that year. He had been linked with the Salzburg job in 2017, but instead joined Leipzig as assistant to Ralf Rangnick last year.

RB Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund said: "We have followed his career and development very closely in recent years, and we have spoken often.

"We are completely convinced about him both as a professional and as a person. He knows our philosophy and way of playing football very well."

Marsch will be aiming to end a run that has seen Salzburg fail to get past the Champions League qualifiers for 11 seasons in a row, although they did reach last season's Europa League semifinals.

Before turning to coaching, Marsch played 14 seasons in MLS and made two appearances for the U.S. national team.
