Chris Jans takes responsibility for firing

Men's College Basketball, Bowling Green Falcons

Fired Bowling Green Falcons men's basketball coach Chris Jans apologized in a statement Friday for the incident that led to his dismissal.

"After our final loss of the season I went to a bar to be amongst friends, became intoxicated and proceeded to act in a manner which was inappropriate," Jans said in the statement. "I have tried to instill in every student I've coached the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions, and that is what I am trying to do now."

Jans was fired April 2 after an inquiry into his conduct.

"The University concluded that Jans' public conduct failed to meet his obligations as a head coach and the expectations that BGSU Athletics has for its coaches," Bowling Green said in a statement.

Assistant coach Mark Downey is overseeing the day-to-day operations while the school searches for the 17th head coach in the program's history.

Jans guided the Falcons to a 21-12 record in his first and only season. The 21 victories marked a nine-game improvement for Bowling Green from last season.

The Falcons went 1-1 in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament after an 11-7 mark in the Mid-American Conference.

"I plan to use the future months and years to improve myself as an individual and to show them that their faith in me as a coach, and a person, was not unwarranted," Jans said.
