New Mexico targets New Mexico State's Paul Weir for coaching job

New Mexico State's Paul Weir has emerged as the top target for the head-coaching vacancy at New Mexico, sources told ESPN.

Nothing is finalized yet, sources said, but discussions are ongoing.

Weir, 37, led New Mexico State to a 28-6 record and an NCAA tournament appearance in his lone season at the helm. He had spent the previous nine seasons as an assistant coach under Marvin Menzies with the Aggies.

Weir, a Canada native, was also an assistant coach at Iowa and Northwestern State.

New Mexico is replacing Craig Neal, who was fired on April 1 after four seasons as the head coach.
