UFC middleweight Yoel Romero thinking move to light heavyweight

UFC middleweight Yoel Romero is considering a move up to light heavyweight, his manager, Malki Kawa, told ESPN's Ariel Helwani on Monday.

Kawa said he has already had discussions with the UFC, which makes sense due to his recent trouble getting down to 185 pounds. Light heavyweight fighters can weigh up to 205 pounds one day prior to stepping in the Octagon.

Romero failed to make weight ahead of his past two bouts: UFC 225 in June against Robert Whittaker and UFC 221 in February against Luke Rockhold. Both fights were for a chance at the middleweight title, but he was ineligible because of his weight cut.

Kawa said the intended plan after such a decision is to face UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier for his belt. Cormier is currently the top fighter in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions after knocking out Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 in Las Vegas this past Saturday. Both Cormier and Romero are former Olympic wrestlers.

"We're talking to the UFC about [Yoel Romero] moving to light heavyweight," Kawa said. "I was looking at his record and looking at some of the guys he beat. I don't know what the fans are going to think about Yoel Romero vs. Daniel Cormier for the belt since Daniel wants a big fight. I think that's the biggest fight you could make."

Romero (13-3) is coming off a decision loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC 225. He was 9-1 in his past 10 prior to that fight.
