Adelaide 36ers deny Illawarra Hawks in NBL comeback win

Australian Boomers star Nathan Sobey poured in 23 points to lead the Adelaide 36ers to a 102-96 comeback victory over the Illawarra Hawks.

Adelaide's 10th win of the season lifted them into equal fourth spot with nine games remaining in the regular season.

American guard Ramone Moore (22 points, seven assists) was superb off the bench for the Sixers, calmly nailing clutch free-throws in crunch time.

Fellow import Demitrius Conger (19 points, five assists, four steals) made his presence felt against his former side.

The Hawks led at every change and were up by nine in the fourth quarter before the Sixers stole their thunder and left them fighting an uphill battle to stay in finals reckoning.

Illawarra (8-11) face a must-win game against Sydney on Sunday, while the Sixers host the Townsville Bullets on Saturday night.

Brian Conklin led the Hawks with 22 points, Todd Blanchfield had 19 and Tim Coenraad added 12.

The Hawks enjoyed a perfect start, making their first five shots and building an early lead.

Adelaide cut the margin to two before the home team surged to a 32-22 quarter-time lead.

Conklin had nine points, while Blanchfield and Coenraad combined for 15.

Illawarra continued to keep the Sixers at bay throughout the second period but Conger and Daniel Johnson found their offensive rhythm for Adelaide and the lead was trimmed to 53-51 at half-time.

Both teams shot well in the first half - the Hawks connecting on 61 per cent and Adelaide 59 per cent.

The Sixers grabbed their first lead early in the third period but the Hawks swiftly hit back and were ahead 78-72 heading into the final quarter.

Adelaide didn't get impatient and over-powered the home team down the stretch.
