Silver Ferns netball great Kopua to retire

New Zealand great Casey Kopua will retire from all netball at the end of the year, ending a storied 16-season international career.

Former Silver Ferns captain and ferocious circle defender Kopua hopes her injury-ravaged body can take her to a fourth World Cup in Liverpool in July.

She will be 34 by then and said it was unreasonable to play on given her history of serious injuries and a young family.

Kopua emerged from international retirement last year but couldn't play in the Quad Series or the Constellation Cup against Australia because of a foot problem.

"This next six months is the biggest six months for me because after that, that's it. The only difference is this time it's for good. My mind is willing, but my body isn't," Kopua said.

Kopua became New Zealand captain in 2009 at the age of 24 and led New Zealand to a second successive Commonwealth Games gold medal a year later. She has played 104 Tests.

Kopua was skipper of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic team who won the former trans-Tasman league in 2012, the only Kiwi team to achieve the feat in nine seasons.
