Flames sign former former Hurricanes forward Derek Ryan

The Calgary Flames have signed former Hurricanes forward Derek Ryan -- giving him a three-year deal with an average annual value of $3.125 million.

Ryan had a career year with 38 points last season in 80 games. Even though he is 31, he has only been in the league three years after playing in the minors, going to college and playing overseas before getting his shot.

Ryan has played on three straight one-year contracts. He earned $1.425 million last season after getting $600,000 each of the previous two years.

The Flames also inked forward Austin Czarnik and re-signed defenseman Dalton Prout.
