INDIANAPOLIS -- Jamie McMurray won't return to Chip Ganassi Racing in a full-time role next year, Chip Ganassi told the Associated Press.
Ganassi has offered McMurray a ride for the 2019 Daytona 500 and has asked if he would take a leadership role in the organization much like Dario Franchitti has with Ganassi's IndyCar Series team, according to the report Monday.
McMurray, who has competed full time in the NASCAR Cup Series since 2003, declined comment Friday when asked if he could give any insight into his 2019 plans. He also declined comment Monday on the AP report.
Ganassi told the AP that McMurray had not told him whether he would accept the offer or look to continue his career elsewhere.
"I love Jamie McMurray, and I want him on my team," Ganassi said. "In a Dario role, though."
The 42-year-old McMurray has seven career victories in 571 career starts, but he's won some of the sport's biggest races including the 2010 Daytona 500 and 2010 Brickyard 400.
He's 21st in the Cup standings and would need to win the Brickyard 400 on Monday to make the 16-driver playoff field.
His departure would leave an opening at Ganassi, one that could be filled by 2004 Cup champion Kurt Busch.
Busch, whose contract is up at Stewart-Haas Racing, said Friday that he is still considering two offers for 2019.
