The Cardiff Blues have confirmed head coach Danny Wilson will leave the region at the end of the season, having decided against renewing his contract.

A statement released by the Blues on Wednesday confirmed that the search for Wilson's successor will begin immediately.

The Cardiff coach has been linked recently with a move to Northampton Saints, but his next move remains unclear. Wilson insisted on Wednesday, though, that he remains committed to his current employers.

He said: "This was obviously a very difficult decision to make and I am very grateful to Cardiff Blues for the opportunities they have given to me.

"I will be fully committed to Cardiff Blues for the remainder of my time here and am now solely focused on this weekend's match with Munster."

Cardiff, who finished seventh in the PRO12 last season, secured their first win of the new campaign at Connacht on Saturday but remain bottom of Conference A.

"It is disappointing that Danny has decided not to take up the offer of a new contract and will not be part of our strategy moving forward," Blues chief executive Richard Holland said.

"We will begin the process of finding a successor immediately and we will consult key individuals to ensure we make the right appointment for Cardiff Blues."
