Leicester's Jonny May is 'best left winger in England' - Matt O'Connor

Jonny May is the best left wing in England, according to Leicester head coach Matt O'Connor.

May scored his sixth try of the campaign in the Tigers' 28-27 win over London Irish, with Nick Malouf and Will Evans also crossing.

It meant Leicester recorded their fourth straight Aviva Premiership win, but Irish, without a victory since the opening day, did earn a losing bonus point thanks to tries from Blair Cowan, David Paice and Alex Lewington.

But it was man-of-the-match May who put in another sparkling performance and O'Connor said he would have no doubts about selecting him for England if he were in Eddie Jones' shoes.

"I think he's easily the best finisher and best left winger in England and I would certainly pick him but it's not my decision," he said.

"He's a threat, he's defensively good, he's committed and he finishes and creates opportunities and that's what you want.

"That's what we need and he's given us so much and I think he'll be very close to Test selection.

"The four points is important away from home, that's four on the bounce which is a first time for a while."

London Irish trailed by 21-3 when Evans went over for his third Premiership try early in the second half but they fought their way back to earn a deserved losing bonus point.

In the final play of the game, Lewington cut an excellent line to dot down under the posts and keep them five points ahead of Worcester in the league table.

"I am proud of the boys, they have massive hearts and they are fighters," London Irish director of rugby Nick Kennedy said.

"They are fighting to the 83rd minute and at the end of games they've been very strong which is excellent.

"We need to stop giving ourselves those mountains to climb.

"We talk about improving things as a team and that was slightly better. It's disappointing -- we know we need to get better in the first half and we need to get better in our defence."
