Exeter boss Rob Baxter wants the Chiefs to give Glasgow "some headaches" in Saturday's European Champions Cup clash at Sandy Park.

Glasgow will arrive in Devon on the back of six successive Guinness PRO14 victories, while English champions Exeter are currently just one point behind Aviva Premiership leaders Saracens.

It has all the ingredients of a classic Pool Three encounter, with Exeter knowing that an opening home victory is vital if they want to progress from a fearsome group that also includes three-time European Cup winners Leinster and French heavyweights Montpellier.

"Our focus has always been to get into the Champions Cup and hit it as hard as we can," Chiefs rugby director Baxter said.

"What I would like to think is that our experiences of the last couple of years of being involved in big games will hold us in good stead in round one.

"I am not setting any big targets for the six pool games, other than I've said to the lads that I want to see six Exeter Chiefs-style performances, and that will in itself show an improvement on how we've performed in Europe in the past.

"Glasgow look good. They look dangerous, they've scored some really good tries, they look comfortable with what they are trying to do.

"Obviously, we want to give them some headaches that they will have to try to deal with. I think it will be quite an interesting contrast in styles, because although we like to play, we also like to think we can create some pressure defensively."

Exeter, beaten three times from four starts in previous opening European fixtures, also lost their first Premiership fixture at Gloucester six weeks ago, and fly-half Gareth Steenson added: "The Gloucester game was probably a bit of an eye-opener.

"It showed what it meant to the opposition to beat us, and it sharpened the mind a little bit.

"If you can get yourself out of the group in Europe, then anything can happen. It's knockout rugby then.

"We've got to get off to a good start. You don't want to be losing your first game at home, because you are then automatically on the back foot."

Exeter will be without injured England wing Jack Nowell, so Lachie Turner lines up on the wing and Phil Dollman is recalled at full-back, while flanker Julian Salvi is handed a call-up instead of Dave Dennis, who is sidelined through injury.
