Ross Moriarty will leave Gloucester at the end of the season to join PRO14 side Dragons.

Moriarty, who came through the Cherry and Whites academy, has made 81 appearances for the club while earning 17 caps for Wales and touring New Zealand with the British & Irish Lions.

The former England Under-20 international would have become ineligible for Wales from next season, however, had he not moved to a Welsh region when his Gloucester contract expires this summer.

Under the Welsh Rugby Union's new selection policy Warren Gatland can only pick players with 60 caps or more who ply their trade outside of Wales.

The back row had therefore been heavily linked with a move to the PRO14, and the Dragons confirmed Monday that he had decided to head to Rodney Parade. Moriarty has agreed a deal directly with the region, and will not move on a National Dual Contract.

"It is with much excitement that I am able to announce the completion of my transfer to Welsh regional side, the Dragons," Moriarty said in a statement released by the Dragons.

"After meeting with Bernard Jackman [Dragons head coach], I was excited by the future plans of the club as the region looks to begin a new chapter in its history.

"Playing international rugby is the pinnacle of every player's career and with the new rules, it left me with no choice but to move to Wales to further my international ambitions, especially with the Rugby World Cup ahead."

Earlier, Gloucester had announced that Moriarty would be moving on from Kingsholm, following more than five years in the Cherry and Whites first team.

"Gloucester Rugby can confirm that back-row forward Ross Moriarty will leave the club at the end of the season," a statement released on the club's website read.

"A product of the Gloucester Rugby Academy, Ross has developed into an international player during his time at Kingsholm but has now agreed terms elsewhere."
