The Southern Kings have started their PRO14 European tour without head coach Deon Davids, who has stayed back in South Africa due to medical reasons, the team has confirmed.

The Kings did not reveal the nature of Davids' complaint, but suggested he would link up with the side at a later date.

In his absence, assistant coach Barend Pieterse will lead the side in matches against Ulster (9 February) in Ireland, Welsh club Ospreys (17 February) and Irish side Leinster (23 February).

"We can confirm that head coach Deon Davids has not travelled with the touring squad due to medical reasons," a media release from the Kings said.

"Davids will join up with the rest of the squad at a later date. Until his return, coach Barend Pieterse will take up the reins. We would like to wish him all the best with his recovery and hope to see him back soon."

The Kings have had a dismal maiden campaign in PRO14 this season having lost all 13 of the matches they have played.
