England: Beno Obano withdraws from training squad with knee injury

Rugby

Beno Obano has suffered another injury setback just as he was poised to revive his England prospects.

Obano on Friday sustained a knee problem at the training camp held in Brighton to prepare for the visit of the Barbarians to Twickenham on May 27.

The Bath prop would have been selected in Eddie Jones' squad for the recent NatWest 6 Nations but for an injury to the same joint in January.

"Beno Obano has suspected ligament damage in his left knee. He will return to his club Bath for scans and further assessment," a Rugby Football Union statement read.

Obano, Maro Itoje's older cousin by three days, broke into an England squad for the first time at the start of the year only to pop his knee in and out of its joint a couple of weeks later.

The loosehead, 23, was set to play a role in the non-cap international against the Barbarians, most likely as support to Joe Marler.
