Rugby Championship: Wallabies squad named for Springboks clash

Michael Cheika has sprung a major selection shock as he seeks to rectify the Wallabies' fortunes in the Rugby Championship.

Cheika has named veteran back Kurtley Beale at No.10 in place of long-term Wallabies fly-half Bernard Foley, the move making way for Matt Toomua to slot in at No.12 for the Suncorp Stadium clash with the Springboks on Saturday night.

It will be Beale's first Test at No.10 since he started back-to-back Bledisloe Cup games at fly-half in 2014 under then-Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie. But it will be his maiden start in the role under Cheika, with the under-pressure coach having previously used him exclusively at inside centre or fullback.

It is a tough call on Foley, who was thought to have been one of the Wallabies' better performers in Auckland. Foley created the line break that put Reece Hodge over and saved what looked like a certain try to Jordie Barrett with a desperate cover tackle.

Foley, who turns 29 on Saturday, has never been benched during Cheika's reign as coach, having started in his last 51 Test appearances.

He took the news on the chin, according to Cheika, but it's a clear message to the rest of his teammates that complacency will no longer be tolerated.

"I suppose I just wanted to shake it up a little bit," Cheika told reporters on Thursday.

"I think, today, this is the best combination for us to go into this game.

"(Foley's) not doing anything wrong in particular, but I feel he could be playing better because he's a quality player and he has shown that for us on many occasions.

"This is an opportunity for him to get back to focusing a little bit more on himself and not as much on the team and bringing his performance up."

The new-look backline combination is completed by the return of Israel Folau from injury, the superstar fullback shaking off the ankle complaint that kept him out of Bledisloe II in Auckland.

There is one change to the forward pack with Brumbies lock Rory Arnold replacing Izack Rodda in the second-row.

Cheika will be looking for some impact off the bench from Reds sensation Taniela Tupou, who will make his first appearance of the Championship after a hamstring strain kept him out of both Bledisloe Cup games. Tupou is joined on the bench by Ned Hanigan and Joe Powell.

Sekope Kepu, 32, hasn't been left out of an Australian squad when fit since 2010.

"For our tight five players and especially ones with experience, work ethic is king," Cheika said.

"Now it's an opportunity for other players so we will see who it takes it."

Meanwhile, Rory Arnold has come in for his first Test in a year, replacing Izack Rodda, who drops to the bench.

"He's aggressive and he's a big, tall unit ... I'm sure he'll empty the tank," Cheika said.
