The high-scoring trend in the Currie Cup continued when the Blue Bulls beat Griquas 45-40 in a thrilling encounter in Kimberley on Saturday.
The Bulls scored seven tries on the day to earn a bonus point to go with their second win of the season. Griquas scored six tries of their own in an entertaining match. The Bulls looked to run away with the clash by scoring four tries before the half-hour mark, but the home side fought back to go into the break 28-21 behind.
A brace of tries from centre Franco Naude, as well as scores from scrumhalf Andre Warner and hooker Jaco Visagie gave the Bulls an excellent start. Flyhalf Mannie Libbok converted all four tries.
Prop Nicolaas Oosthuizen barged over the line for Griquas' first score of the weekend, while Andre Swarts scored the first of his two tries in the 36th minute. The home side then earned a penalty try shortly before halftime, when Bulls wing Duncan Matthews was yellow carded for collapsing a maul.
Griquas drew level shortly after the break when flank Eital Bredenkamp scored their fourth try to secure a bonus-point of their own, before Swarts scored his second try to give them the lead.
Hooker Edgar Marutlulle, though, hit back for the Bulls after a strong maul, before Jano Venter and scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl also crossed the tryline to give the visitors a 10-point lead by the 70th minute.
However, the home side came within five points with a couple of minutes to play when fullback AJ Coertzen went over to score. Unfortunately, though, they couldn't get another score to win the encounter.
