Scottish club Edinburgh held off a second half comeback from South Africa's Cheetahs to record a 37-21 win at Murrayfield on Friday and win for a third time in the new PRO14 season with a late try ensuring a bonus point.
Edinburgh outscored their visitors four tries to three with the boot of Simon Hickey making a major contribution as the Cheetahs remain without a victory, having lost five of their six games this season and drawing the other.
Hickey, 24, who moved to the Scottish capital from New Zealand at the start of the year, slotted three penalties and four conversions for a 17 point tally.
Edinburgh's tries came from Australian-born lock Ben Toolis, the 21-year-old winger Darcy Graham, Fiji Olympic gold medalist Villiame Mata and substitute Jamie Ritchie while speedy winger Rabs Maxwane scored twice for the visitors with Nico Lee dotting down their other.
They held out in the end as the Cheetahs attacked through the last 15 minutes in search of a maiden victory this season but were let down by a host of errors before the home scrum drove over the line in the last minute to make sure there would be no last gasp surprises.
The hosts burst out into a quick 13-point lead as Hickey first put over two penalties before Toolis got the opening try in the 20th minute, which Hickey also converted.
It was the first of three tries in the first half with Nico Lee replying for the Cheetahs but Graham, in his first start since February, going over to ensure a 20-7 lead at the interval.
Maxwane's double suddenly gave the Cheetahs' hopes of a comeback as he scored soon overt half-time and brushed through more tackles for a second try six minutes after the first to give the Cheetahs a slender 21-20 lead.
But Hickey's 52nd minute penalty restored the home lead and then number eight Mata picked up from behind the scrum and reached out his arm to dot down as Edinburgh went 30-21 ahead.
After prop Charles Marais was yellow carded in the last three minutes, Edinburgh took advantage of a 14-man Cheetahs to claim the bonus point in the last minute.
The Scottish club are away at Zebre in Italy in their next outing on October 26 while the Cheetahs head home to prepare to face the Cardiff Blues in Bloemfontein on Oct. 27.
