Premiership round-up: Bath overcome Wasps, Gloucester edge Newcastle

Rugby

Bath moved into the top six in the Gallagher Premiership thanks to an inspired performance from Freddie Burns as they beat Wasps 24-14.

Fly-half Burns scored 19 points including a fine first-half try and Will Chudley also crashed over for Todd Blackadder's side.

Wasps gave themselves hope through Thomas Young's score but made too many errors to mount a comeback and have now won just once in their last 12 matches.

Third-place Gloucester took the chance to stretch their lead over Wasps as they defeated struggling Newcastle 20-17.

Billy Twelvetrees' last gasp penalty secured victory for the Cherry and Whites after Ben Morgan had crashed over to level the scores in the second half.

Ed Slater's try on the stroke of half-time had given Gloucester the lead before Newcastle wrestled the advantage back after the break with a try from Vereniki Goneva and penalties from Sonatane Takulua.

The result leaves Newcastle bottom of the table before Christmas but means Gloucester now have an eight-point cushion to Wasps in fourth.
